About Catherine

Ms. Houska is an internationally recognized consultant on architectural and structural metals with over 35 years of experience, author of more than 200 publications. She is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

 

Catherine consults globally on architectural and structural metals during design, historic restoration and where forensic evaluation is required. Her building consulting experience includes a wide variety of buildings (supertalls, high-end private residences, transportation buildings, museums, and others). The structures on which she has consulted include memorials and monuments (Gateway Arch, US Air Force, New Jersey & Pentagon 9/11, The Vessel at Hudson Yards, Four Freedoms, etc.), and both vehicular and pedestrian (i.e. San Diego Harbor Drive, etc.) bridges.

Her clients include well-known architects, structural engineers, developers, building owners, fabricators, contractors, insurance companies, metal producers, finish suppliers and stainless steel, copper, molybdenum and nickel industry associations.

 

She has substantial experience with standards and their development. At ASTM International, she is particularly involved in A01 Steel and E60 Sustainability. She is chair of E60.80 General Sustainability standards and has chaired numerous task groups to develop and revise standards. These include A955 (stainless steel concrete reinforcement) and A1069 (laser and hybrid laser welded stainless steel structural sections). 

Ms. Houska is a long term USGBC member and developer/presenter of AIA continuing education programming.  She also assisted with the APTA passenger railcar and station guideline, the SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual and NAAMM Finishes Manual.

 

Catherine was a steering committee member for the development of AISC Steel Design Guide 27: Structural Stainless Steel.  She is currently serving as a member of both the AISC A370 Specification for Structural Stainless Steel in Buildings (developing a new standard) and SEI/ASCE 8 Cold Formed Stainless Steel Standard (revision) committees.
